Egypt prosecutors order detention of 14 policemen for role in jailbreak

Egyptian prosecutors have ordered the detention of 14 policemen for their alleged role in a deadly jailbreak last week in the Suez Canal city of Ismailia.

Six inmates, including jailed Islamic militants escaped from the prison after they overpowered one of the guards and grabbed his weapon.
The country’s prosecutors late on Sunday ordered that the 14 policemen be detained pending further investigation into the jailbreak.

They face charges of negligence and complicity during the prisoners’ escape.
A police major who tried to apprehend the escaping inmates was killed while another policeman and a passer-by were wounded.
The Interior Ministry, which runs the police, has launched an independent investigation into Thursday’s incident.
