The death toll from Egypt’s migrant boat tragedy has reached 177
after eight more bodies were pulled out of the Mediterranean waters on
Tuesday.
The boat capsized off Burg Rashed, a coastal village in the Nile Delta, on September 21, and is said to have been carrying more than 600 people.
Rescue workers said they had rescued at least 169 people, though there is no tally for the number of people still unaccounted for.
The spokesman for the Beheira regional governor said the shipwreck had been hoisted out of the depths and was likely to contain dozens more bodies.
Officials said the boat was carrying Egyptian, Sudanese, Eritrean and Somali migrants, and that they believed it was heading for Italy.
Four crew members of the boat were arrested and are in detention as investigations continue.
