Panic has gripped Mt Kenya region following reports of the sudden fall of a fig tree (mugumo) days after Raila Odinga was named the National Super Alliance (NASA) flagbearer.
Mugumo tree is very significant to the Kikuyu community, as it is linked with the ways of worship to the community. It is also considered sacred, and if it falls fall, elders conduct elaborate rituals to appease their gods .
News of the tree toppling down in Karatina has been interpreted by Kikuyu elders to portend a seismic political change in the country.
A section of Kikuyu’s are worried that this could be a sign of Uhuru’s downfall in the August 8th polls. This year alone, two mugumo trees have fallen and one is precariously threatening to topple anytime soon.
History is replete with examples of major catastrophes happening everytime a fig tree falls in Central Kenya.
A mugumo tree fell a day after JM Kariuki died. He was known for his unrelenting fight for land rights of the members of his Kikuyu community.
Kenya founding President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta died the same year a mugumo tree fell in Chania.
Kikuyu council of elders have called for special prayers to avoid a major catastrophe from hitting the community.
