8 People killed in Zambia stampede over food aid

At last eight people were killed and 28 others injured in a stampede in the Zambian capital Lusaka on Monday as thousands struggled to claim food handouts, police said.
Police in the Southern African nation have opened an inquiry into the deadly incident that occurred following an attempt by more than 35,000 people to enter a sports complex where the Church of Christ was giving out food parcels.

“We have since dispersed the gathering and an inquiry into the matter has been instituted,” a police statement said.
According to the World Bank, 60 percent of the people in Zambia live below the poverty line, with 42 percent considered to be extremely poor.
