40 Ethiopians arrested in Kenya for illegal assembly

Kenyan police have arrested about 40 Ethiopians in the capital Nairobi for holding an illegal meeting.
The Ethiopians are from the Oromo ethnic group, the largest in Ethiopia, and are suspected to have been planning protests against the Ethiopian government.

“The 40 Oromos had assembled at the City Park in Nairobi without notifying the police. We are interrogating them,” Koome said Monday, adding that they would be charged in court for illegal assembly.

The police revealed that some of those arrested were in the country illegally, and could be deported back after scrutiny of their documents.
Oromo’s in Ethiopia have been holding anti-government protests, calls that were amplified after Ethiopian runners at the Rio Olympic Games showed their solidarity with the protests.
