Babu Owino To Be Charged On Wednesday Over Hate Speech

The Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) chairman Babu Owino will on Wednesday appear in court to face hate speech charges.

Nairobi Police Boss Japheth Koome told Capital FM News that the vocal SONU chairman who was arrested Tuesday spent the night at the Kilimani Police station where he recorded a statement.

“Babu was arrested yesterday (Tuesday) and he is set to appear in court today (Wednesday) to be charged with making utterances amounting to hate speech,” he said.

Also arrested Tuesday were eight lawmakers from the ruling Jubilee Alliance and the rival Coalition for Reforms and Democracy who spent the night in police cells over hate speech after they were arraigned in court.

Jubilee MPs Moses Kuria, Ferdinand Waititu and Kimani Ngunjiri will remain behind bars for four days pending investigations into the allegations alongside CORD’s Junet Mohammed, Timothy Bosire, Florence Mutua and Aisha Jumwa.

Also detained was Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama.
