Five per cent of Kenyans still illiterate in spite of free education

Kenya introduced free universal primary education programme in 2002 increasing school enrolment rate, more than a third have not gone beyond primary school and at least five percent of the population is still illiterate according to a survey by released by Ipsos Synovate.

“Despite major increases in enrolment in educational institutions at all levels, still more than one third of all adult Kenyans have not gone beyond primary school,” read part of the report.
The Survey further indicates that 44 per cent of Kenyans have primary school level education and below.


From Kenya’s population of 47.8 million people, 2.4 million Kenyans have no formal education and another 16,252,000 only primary-level education.
Kenyan northeastern region which is afflicted with violence from cattle raiding has the highest number of uneducated residents, with 66 per cent not having completed primary school.

Kenya’s Coast which is popular for tourism in the country comes in second with a 57 per cent of residents not done with primary education followed by the western province at 53 percent, eastern 45 percent and Rift Valley where to the Maasai Mara national park home to the 7th wonder of the world, wildebeest migration is found is at 42 per cent.
Seven per cent of the total population in Kenya is in casual labour.
