John Kerry urges amendment of Montreal Protocol

The United States Secretary of State John Kerry has urged delegates at the 28th Meeting of Parties  to the Montreal Protocol to pass an ambitious amendment to better protect the ozone layer.

Speaking at the Kigali Convention Center where more than 1,000 delegates from 197 countries are meeting for the talks, Kerry urged the delegates to make a mark in history by amending the Protocol in order to reduce the amount of hydro-fluorocarbons emitted to the atmosphere daily.

“Every hour, the amount of hydro-fluorocarbons that we can reduce makes a big difference,” he said.
“Let us get this job done just like we did in Paris. Let us move forward and together we shall leave here with pride,” he added.

If passed, the amendment would help the world avoid a 0.5°C global warming by the end of the century.
Experts also say that the passing of the amendment would help the world reduce the number of skin cancer cases by two million annually.
