Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League title hopes suffered a
major blow as they were held to a 1-1 draw against West Brom on Monday.
Craig Dawson made up for his first-half own goal by
scoring a 73rd-minute equaliser for the Baggies, and Spurs could not find a
goal themselves despite hitting the woodwork three times.
With three games remaining, Tottenham are now seven
points behind leaders Leicester City, who will be able to clinch the title with
a win at Manchester United on Sunday.
Harry Kane came within inches of giving Tottenham a
seventh-minute lead when Dele Alli played him through on goal, but West Brom
keeper Boaz Myhill did remarkably well to save as the ball came off the inside
of the post and stayed out.
Christian Eriksen went close six minutes later as his
free kick skimmed off the top of the bar.
Alli could face retrospective punishment for an incident
in the 26th minute after replays caught him giving West Brom's Claudio Yacob a
quick punch to the gut while officials were looking away.
Tottenham's goal came seven minutes later as Eriksen sent
a free kick into the box, where Dawson was grappling with Tottenham's Jan
Vertonghen. The ball squirmed out from under Dawson and past Myhill, giving
Spurs the lead.
West Brom started to show signs of life after half-time,
though Tottenham nearly doubled their lead when Eriksen pulled the ball back
for Lamela, who hit the far post with his first-time shot in the 58th minute.
But the Baggies responded with a goal following a corner
when Dawson out-jumped Eric Dier to severely damage Spurs' title hopes.
The result means any win by Leicester City -- at
Manchester United, at home against Everton or away to Chelsea, will secure the
Premier League title for the Foxes, leaving Tottenham to wonder what might have
been.
