Why Harambee Stars Lost To Guinea Bissau - Victor Wanyama Reveals

Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has come out to explain why he believes the national team lost against minnows Guinea Bissau in their Wednesday encounter.

Speaking after the team landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday, March 24, Wanyama blamed the loss on lack of concentration from the players.

“We started the match well, and we were comfortable in the initial stages, but we somehow lost concentration with the lapses costing us positive result. It is a painful lesson we learnt away but that is football. If you lose concentration, it happens and you end up regretting later,” Wanyama said as quoted by goal.com .

The loss greatly dented Harambee Stars’ chances of qualifying to the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2004.

But Wanyama believes that there are chances of qualifying if Stars win all their remaining matches and hoping that other teams slip in the process.

“On Sunday we have a chance to rectify the mistakes we did, and we will take that opportunity with both hands. We still have a chance of making it to the finals next year if we win our remaining matches,” he added.

The Southampton midfielder joined the national team late having seen his flight delayed in Morocco following strikes by airline workers in France.

Harambee Stars welcome Bissau in a return leg at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, March 27, as they look to overturn the humiliating defeat.

Kenyans took to social media to blast new coach Stanley Okumbi for his team selection which they believe cost the team.

But Okumbi has defended his decision saying he will again pick youthful players whom he believes can deliver.

His sentiments were echoed by new FKF chairman Nick Mwendwa. Mwedwa says that FKF aims the 2022 world cup.

Harambee Stars have three matches remaining. Against Bissau, Congo and Zambia.
